Relocating Abroad: A Personal Journey

Updated: Apr 29

Moving abroad can be particularly overwhelming (especially for first-timers) and despite whatever suggestion or advice we scavenge across the internet, the life we will experience may or may not be the same as other people say and live. Should we start worrying about it then? Not! 🙂

Remember: relocating abroad is not a “one-size-fits-all” process.  It is an extremely personal journey, unique and only ours.

It may happen that we share opinions with like-minded people or other expats moving abroad for similar reasons. In other cases, we are probably looking for different things in our experiences.

For some people, for instance, moving abroad means starting a new exciting adventure. For others it means saying goodbye to loved ones and familiar landscapes they miss very much. Some choose to leave while others simply have no other choice or it’s the result of a compromise. It’s their personal experience.

An advice is a piece of feedback that we may or may not decide to follow. It’s up to us!It should also not influence our choice, both in a good and in a bad way.

This means, unless it is undeniably horrible or undeniably wonderful, that nothing is really that perfect and at the same time nothing is really that bad!

So what to do, then?

Considering we are moving as a personal choice, you should choose your next destination according to what you are looking for in the life of your dreams, regardless of any postcard advertising.

Is it a big city? Is it maybe the countryside? Is it a place with a lot of job opportunities? Or is a place full of green areas?

You may find a place that ticks all the boxes in your checklist but what if it doesn't? What are you willing to sacrifice among the items of that list and be successfully happy anyway?

Are all the people coming with you on board with this choice?

A perfect place or situation, of course, does not exist.

However, looking for things we really need and want may help us choose the place that we may call home, regardless of the initial idea of home we had in mind.

Who knows? It’s possible that the right place for you is actually just a few steps away from a well thought, personal research for a home.

Good luck!
