Meet the Globally Locals Founders: Alessandra

Updated: Aug 26

To introduce the founders of Globally Locals to you who follow our posts here on the blog, we interviewed each of the co-founders. Soon you will meet all of them! Today, you will meet Alessandra! :)

  1. What inspired you to create Globally Locals and build the Pathfinder?

I was discussing with my partner what the main challenges of moving abroad were and while talking about it we both agreed that one of the main challenges we had to go through was managing expectations and cultural shock. We simply thought it would have been cool to have had a platform helping us choose the best destination for our needs and as it did not exist yet, why not build it ourselves?

2. How many times have you relocated in the past?

Four times. Twice Italy and then also the U.K. and Germany.

3. How old were you when you first relocated? How old were you when you relocated last time?

The first time I relocated I was eight years old. I later moved to study in my twenties. The last time I relocated I just turned thirty years old.

4. What were the main challenges you had to go through when you relocated abroad?

Building a network after Covid, cultural shock and learning a new language.

5. What are the most exciting aspects of your experience so far?

I learned a lot along the way and it definitely opened my mind and heart to different experiences and ways of life. I feel way richer than I would have been if I had lived in the same place without different points of view to confront myself with.

6. What would you have wanted to know in advance before relocating?

How important it is to try to build a network even before moving, especially if you are a people person. Another aspect is definitely taking a few language classes before moving. It would have made everything easier as it is not mandatory that you will find someone speaking English unless it's the country's first or official language.

7. Would you be open to relocating again in the future or would you recommend it to someone else?

Yes, absolutely, I would relocate again and every time with more awareness of what I want or need, also depending on which stage of my life I am in. I would not recommend it to everyone: expat life is not easy and you need to be strong and have a little bit of a sense of adventure, especially during those rainy days when you are homesick or miss your loved ones left behind. If you need help, ask for it and also refer to a professional if needed. It can be life-changing. I would say: think about it thoroughly, considering both exciting and challenging aspects. If you are still willing to go, then take your chances and go on an adventure! You can still go back if it's not for you. Unless you are forced to go but that's a different topic.
